Odourless Cockroach Killer: Why Gel Is the Choice for Your Home and Kitchen

Odourless Cockroach Killer: Why Gel Is the Choice for Your Home and Kitchen

The short answer

  • Gel bait is the closest thing to an odourless cockroach treatment. It goes in small spots inside cracks, and nothing is sprayed into the air, so most people notice no smell in the room.
  • You do not need to leave the house or air it out. Total release foggers ("bug bombs") need everyone out for 2–4 hours, and sprays leave a smell and a film on surfaces.
  • No smell does not mean no insecticide. Gel still goes where children, pets and food cannot reach it.

Why sprays and foggers smell, and gel does not

A spray or a fogger puts insecticide into the air so it can land on surfaces. What you smell is the propellant, the solvent and often an added fragrance, and it lingers on every surface it settles on.

The US Environmental Protection Agency tells people using a fogger to leave the space with their pets and stay out for the time on the label, usually two to four hours, then open doors and windows to clear the fumes. It also warns that the propellants are usually flammable.

Foggers do not even do the job well. A 2019 North Carolina State University study in apartments with German cockroaches found that foggers left insecticide residue on floors and countertops, but did not reach the undersides of surfaces and the insides of cabinets where the cockroaches were.

Gel works the other way round. It is food for cockroaches with an insecticide in it, placed as small spots inside the cracks where they hide. It does not need to reach the air or the open surfaces, because the cockroaches come to it.

Gel, spray, fogger and powder compared

Smell in the room Leave the house? Left on open surfaces Reaches the hidden colony
Gel bait Most people notice none No No, it stays inside cracks Yes, carried back to the hiding place
Spray Yes, often strong Usually not, but air it out Yes, a film where it lands Only cockroaches it touches
Fogger (bug bomb) Strong Yes, usually 2–4 hours, then ventilate Yes, on every exposed surface Poorly: cockroaches in cracks are often missed
Powder Little No Yes, visible dust Only cockroaches that walk through it

"Odourless" sprays are not the same thing

Some sprays are sold as odourless. That usually means no added fragrance. The insecticide is still sprayed onto surfaces, it still only kills the cockroaches it touches, and it still makes the rest move deeper into walls or next door.

It also ruins gel. Cockroaches avoid bait on or near a sprayed surface, so if you use gel, do not spray anywhere near it. More in gel bait or spray.

How to treat a kitchen with no smell and no mess

  1. Find where they hide, not where you see them: cabinet hinges and inner corners, around the pipes under the sink, behind the fridge near the motor, and beside the cooker.
  2. Apply small spots of about 0.5 g in those cracks: 1–3 spots per 3 metres for a light problem, 3–5 for a heavy one.
  3. Keep it off food surfaces. Never put gel on worktops, shelves where food sits, or anything that touches food or dishes.
  4. Leave the spots alone when you clean, and check them after about two weeks. Add gel where it has been eaten.

For restaurants, cafés and offices

Because nothing is sprayed into the air, gel can be applied without closing the premises or covering food and equipment, as long as it stays inside cracks and away from food-contact surfaces. Read our cockroach control guide for restaurants.

Quick answers

Does Advion gel have a smell?

It is applied as small spots inside cracks and does not release a spray or vapour into the room, so most people notice no smell.

Do I need to leave the house after applying gel?

No. You can stay at home, cook and sleep as normal.

Is a product with no smell safer?

Not automatically. Smell tells you nothing about the insecticide inside. Always follow the label and keep any treatment out of reach of children and pets. More in is cockroach gel safe around children and pets.
