The short answer
- In an apartment on Abu Dhabi island, the problem is usually German cockroaches in the kitchen and bathrooms, often moving between flats through shared drains. Gel in the cracks where they hide works where sprays push them next door.
- In a villa on the mainland or in Al Ain, you often have two problems: German cockroaches inside, and larger American cockroaches coming up from drains and the garden. Treat both places.

Two kinds of home, two kinds of problem
Apartments: Abu Dhabi island and the older towers
Areas such as Al Khalidiyah, Al Zahiyah, Hamdan Street, Al Nahyan and Al Mushrif have many older residential towers. In these buildings, the cockroach in the kitchen is almost always the German cockroach: small, light brown, with two dark stripes behind the head.
Every flat on the same vertical line shares drain stacks and service shafts. If one flat is sprayed, the cockroaches move into the walls and into the flats around it. That is why bait, which is eaten and carried back to the hiding place, works better in a building than a spray. More on this in our guide to German cockroaches.
Villas: Khalifa City, Mohammed Bin Zayed City, Al Shamkha, Al Reef
Villas add an outdoor problem. Larger American cockroaches (reddish-brown, about 4 cm) live in drains, manholes and garden irrigation, and come inside through floor drains, gaps under doors and service entries, especially at night in the hot months.
You usually need two treatments at the same time:
- Inside: gel in the kitchen, bathrooms and laundry, where German cockroaches hide.
- At the entry points: gel around (not inside) floor drains, at the base of doors to the garden, and where pipes and cables enter the walls. Read American cockroach gel explained for this part.
Al Ain: drier air, the same rule about water
Al Ain is drier than the coast, so cockroaches gather even more closely around water: AC condensate pipes, bathroom drains, kitchen sinks and garden irrigation. Put the gel near these water sources, never in the wet spot itself.

If you also use a pest control company
In Abu Dhabi, pest control companies are licensed, and Tadweer, the emirate's waste management centre, has warned residents never to let unlicensed operators treat their homes. Complaints about poor service can be raised through the Abu Dhabi Government contact centre on 800555 (Gulf News, 2018; Gulf News, 2019).
If a company sprays your flat, tell them where your gel spots are. A residual spray on or near the gel makes cockroaches avoid it. Apply fresh gel in new spots afterwards if needed. For the cost side of this decision, see pest control company or DIY.

Will it work if my building has cockroaches everywhere?
It controls the cockroaches in your home and those that come in and feed on it. Keep a few spots near drains and pipe entries, check them monthly, and tell building management if the problem is building-wide.
Do I need to leave the house?
