The short answer
- Most Sharjah cockroach problems start in the kitchen and bathrooms of apartment buildings, with German cockroaches moving between flats through shared drains. Gel placed in the cracks where they hide reaches them; a spray pushes them next door.
- Moving flat is the moment to act. Apply gel in the new kitchen and bathrooms before the boxes come in, and do not store cardboard there.

Sharjah apartments: why the cockroaches keep coming back
Areas such as Al Nahda, Al Taawun, Al Khan, Al Majaz, Al Qasimia and Rolla are full of mid-rise and high-rise residential buildings. The cockroach in these kitchens is almost always the German cockroach: small, light brown, with two dark stripes behind the head.
Three things keep it going:
- Shared drains and shafts. Flats on the same vertical line are connected through drain stacks, garbage chutes and service shafts.
- Spraying one flat at a time. A spray kills the cockroaches it touches and pushes the rest into the walls and the flats around you.
- Short tenancies. People move often, and cockroaches and their egg cases travel in boxes, furniture and second-hand appliances.

Moving into a new flat in Sharjah
The best time to treat is before you unpack:
- Before the boxes come in, apply small spots of gel in the kitchen and bathrooms: cabinet hinges and corners, around the pipes under the sinks, behind where the fridge and washing machine will stand.
- Check what comes with you. Open boxes outside the kitchen, and look at the backs of second-hand appliances, especially fridges and microwaves, for droppings or egg cases.
- Do not keep cardboard in the kitchen or under the sink. It is a favourite hiding place.
- Check the gel after two weeks and add more where it has been eaten.
Sharjah villas: Al Rahmaniya, Al Suyoh, Al Tay
Villas have a second problem: larger American cockroaches (reddish-brown, about 4 cm) that live in drains, manholes and gardens and come inside at night through floor drains and gaps under doors. If you hire a pest control company in Sharjah
Sharjah City Municipality publishes a list of pest control companies it has certified, and advises residents to:
- ask the company to show its municipality certification
- check that the technician who arrives is the one named on the municipality permit
- ask for an invoice that states the type of service, the names of the pesticides used and the technician's name
A company that refuses can be reported on 06 593 1573 (7:30 am to 2 pm), or on the municipality hotline 993 outside those hours. If the company sprays, tell them where your gel spots are so they do not spray over them.

Building treatments usually cover corridors, shafts and common areas. The cockroaches in your kitchen live inside your cabinets and walls. Gel in those cracks deals with them; just ask that your gel spots are not sprayed.
I see cockroaches only at night. Is it a big problem?
German cockroaches hide during the day, so seeing a few at night usually means many more are hidden. Treat the hiding places, not just the spots where you see them.
Do I need to leave the flat?
