Advion Evolution or Regular Advion: Which Cockroach Gel Do You Need?

The short answer
- Same active, same strength. Both contain indoxacarb 0.6% and share the same US EPA registration number (100-1484), the same spot size and the same list of cockroach species. Evolution is not a "stronger poison".
- The difference is the bait itself. Evolution has a new food matrix with a revised balance of sugars and proteins, made so that cockroaches eat more of it, including populations that have learned to avoid gel.
- Start with regular Advion for most homes. Choose Evolution when cockroaches have stopped eating your gel, for heavy infestations, and for restaurants and kitchens that have been treated many times.
What is actually different
When Syngenta launched Evolution in the US in 2017, it described it as the same active ingredient found in Advion Cockroach, in an enhanced bait matrix that increases feeding in the toughest accounts. Nothing else changes: the way it kills, the label rates and where you can use it are the same.
| Advion Cockroach Gel | Advion Evolution | |
|---|---|---|
| Active ingredient | Indoxacarb 0.6% | Indoxacarb 0.6% |
| US EPA registration | 100-1484 | 100-1484 |
| Bait matrix | Original Advion bait | New matrix, revised balance of sugars and proteins |
| Cockroach species on the label | German, American, Oriental, Australian, brown, smoky-brown, brown-banded, Asian | Same |
| Spot size and rate | About 0.5 g; 1–3 spots per 3 m (light), 3–5 (heavy) | Same |
| Tube | 30 g, about 60 spots | 30 g, about 60 spots |
| Best for | First treatment, light to moderate problems, homes | Gel-shy cockroaches, heavy infestations, commercial kitchens |
Why some cockroaches stop eating gel
German cockroaches can become "bait averse". The best-known case is glucose aversion: Dr Jules Silverman found populations that refuse glucose, a sugar used in many baits, and the trait is inherited. In 2013, researchers at North Carolina State University showed why: in these cockroaches, glucose switches on the taste cells that detect bitter things, so the sugar tastes bad to them.
A bait that a population refuses cannot work, however good the insecticide inside it is. That is the problem Evolution's new matrix was built for.
What the trials show
In Syngenta's trials on a bait-averse laboratory strain of German cockroach, as reported by Professional Pest Manager:
- the cockroaches ate about 60% more Evolution than regular Advion in 24 hours
- after seven days, all of them were dead on Evolution, compared with 81% on regular Advion
- Syngenta's Australian brochure says the time to kill 90% of that strain was 8 days shorter
These are the manufacturer's own results on a strain chosen because it is hard to bait. In an ordinary kitchen where cockroaches are not gel shy, regular Advion is also eaten well, which is why it remains the usual first choice.
Is your gel being refused?
Check the spots after one to two weeks. Signs that cockroaches are avoiding the gel:
- the spots are untouched while you still see cockroaches
- cockroaches walk past or around the gel
- the same gel has been used in the same place many times before, for example by the building or a previous tenant
Before blaming the gel, rule out the usual causes: a spray used near the spots, old dried gel, spots in the wrong places, or easy food left out. Our guide to why cockroach gel fails goes through each one.
Evolution is not a rotation partner for Advion
Because both gels use indoxacarb, moving from Advion to Evolution changes the food, not the way the insecticide works. If you are rotating to manage resistance, rotate to a gel with a different active ingredient, such as Alpine (dinotefuran). See our cockroach rotation programme.
For a heavy problem, many professionals put two or three different gels in separate spots at the same time, so each cockroach finds one it will eat. That is the idea behind our Triple Gel Kit, which has Advion, Alpine and Advion Evolution. Keep each gel in its own spot and never put one gel on top of another.
Which one to buy
| Your situation | Our suggestion |
|---|---|
| First time using gel, light or moderate problem at home | Regular Advion |
| Cockroaches are not eating the gel you used before | Evolution |
| Heavy infestation, or a building treated many times | Evolution, or the Triple Gel Kit |
| Restaurant, café or food business | Evolution, or the Triple Gel Kit |
| Gel worked but cockroaches came back after a few months | Rotate to a different active such as Alpine |
Quick answers
Is Advion Evolution stronger than regular Advion?
No. Both contain indoxacarb 0.6%. Evolution is designed to be eaten more, especially by gel-shy cockroaches, which is why it can work faster in those populations.
Can I put Evolution and regular Advion in the same spot?
No. Put each gel in its own spot, and do not apply one gel on top of another.
Does Evolution work on American cockroaches?
Yes. The label lists American cockroaches along with German and six other species.
Is it safe around children and pets?
The rules are the same as regular Advion: apply it only in cracks and crevices out of reach, never on food surfaces. More in is cockroach gel safe around children and pets.
