Advion Gel for German Cockroaches: Why They Take Over UAE Apartments, and How to Clear Them

Watch the video guide
If the cockroaches in your home are small, light brown and mostly in the kitchen, you are almost certainly dealing with the German cockroach. It is the species behind most apartment infestations in the UAE — and the one Advion Cockroach Gel is most often used against.
It is also the species that most often "comes back". That is not bad luck. It follows from how this cockroach lives, and once you understand that, clearing it becomes a plan rather than a fight.
Is it a German cockroach? A quick comparison
| German cockroach | American cockroach | |
|---|---|---|
| Size | Small — around 1.2–1.6 cm | Large — around 3–4 cm |
| Colour | Light brown, with two dark stripes behind the head | Reddish-brown, with a pale band behind the head |
| Where you see it | Kitchen cabinets, around the sink, appliances, bathrooms | Drains, floor traps, ground floors, garbage areas |
| Lives | Entirely indoors, breeding inside your home | Often comes in from drains and outdoors |
Advion Cockroach Gel is labelled for both species, along with several others. This guide focuses on the German cockroach because it is the one that builds a colony inside your home.
Why German cockroaches are so hard to get rid of
- They breed fast. The female carries an egg case of around 30 to 40 eggs until shortly before it hatches, and produces several in her lifetime. In warm homes, young cockroaches can reach adulthood in roughly two months.
- They are small enough to hide anywhere. Cabinet hinges, gaps behind tiles, the motor area of a fridge, the space around a dishwasher.
- Many populations tolerate common sprays. Repeated exposure to the same household insecticides has left many German cockroach populations resistant to them. Spraying also scatters them deeper into walls.
- They travel with you. Cardboard boxes, grocery deliveries, second-hand appliances and furniture move egg cases from one home to the next.
In UAE apartment buildings, add shared drains and service shafts that connect units — explained in more detail in our guide to Advion in Dubai apartments.
Signs the infestation is bigger than it looks
- Droppings like ground pepper or coffee grounds in cabinet hinges and drawer corners.
- Shed skins — small, light-brown husks near hiding places.
- A musty, oily smell inside cabinets.
- Cockroaches in daytime. German cockroaches avoid light. Seeing them during the day usually means the hiding places are already crowded.
Why Advion suits German cockroaches
Advion is a non-repellent bait, so cockroaches do not avoid it — they eat it and go back to hide. Its active ingredient, indoxacarb, is activated by the cockroach's own enzymes, and the short delay lets the effect spread to others in the colony through contact. Research at Purdue University, carried out on German cockroaches, recorded a chain reaction controlling up to 54 cockroaches from one exposed insect.
That matters because with German cockroaches, the ones you can see are a small fraction of the ones living in the cracks.
A five-step plan to clear them
- Inspect at night. Turn the kitchen light off for 10 minutes, then switch it on or use a torch. Note where they run — those are the cracks to target.
- Clean, but do not spray. Remove grease and crumbs, keep food sealed and do not leave dishes or pet food out overnight. Do not use insecticide sprays in the areas you are going to bait; the label says bait must not go on surfaces recently treated with residual sprays.
- Apply many small spots in the right places. About 0.5 g per spot (roughly 6 mm across), 3–5 spots per 3 metres for a heavy infestation: cabinet hinges and inside corners, under the sink where pipes enter the wall, near — not inside — appliances, and gaps under base cabinets. Never inside electrical equipment. The full technique is in our Advion application guide.
- Follow up at week two. Young cockroaches from egg cases will appear around then. Re-apply wherever the gel has been eaten. See how long Advion takes to work for the full timeline.
- Maintain, then rotate. Keep a few spots near entry points and check monthly. Syngenta recommends rotating gel baits every three months, matching the average life cycle of a German cockroach, to prevent bait aversion — see the 3-month rotation program.
Stopping them from coming back
- Unpack deliveries and grocery boxes promptly and take the cardboard out of the apartment.
- Check second-hand appliances and furniture before bringing them inside.
- Fix dripping taps and AC condensate leaks — water is as important to them as food.
- Seal gaps around pipes under the sink and behind the washing machine.

Quick answers
Does Advion kill German cockroaches?
Yes. German cockroaches are listed on the Advion Cockroach Gel Bait label, alongside American, Oriental, brown-banded and other species.
Can German cockroaches fly?
Adults have wings but rarely fly. They run, and they hitch rides in boxes and appliances.
Are they harmful?
They can carry bacteria onto surfaces and food, and their droppings and shed skins are a known trigger for allergies and asthma — another reason to deal with them properly rather than tolerate a few.
How much gel do I need for a German cockroach problem?
For a kitchen and one or two bathrooms in a typical apartment, one to two 30 g tubes. For a heavy infestation, a villa or a planned rotation, a box of four.
Is it safe with children and pets around?
Applied as directed — small spots in cracks out of reach — it is designed for use in homes. Read our straight answer on children and pets.
