Cockroach Eggs: What They Look Like, Where to Find Them and How to Stop Them Hatching

The short answer

  • Cockroach eggs come in a case, not one by one. It is a small brown capsule, about 8 mm long for the German cockroach, with 30 to 48 eggs inside.
  • Gel does not kill the eggs. It works when a cockroach eats it, and the case protects the eggs. What it does is kill the females that carry the cases and the nymphs that hatch, as long as the gel is still there when they do.
  • That is why a treatment lasts weeks, not days. Keep the gel topped up for at least a month and repeat the application after about two weeks.

What a cockroach egg case looks like

The egg case is called an ootheca. It looks like a tiny brown purse or bean with a ridge along one side.

German cockroach (small, kitchens and bathrooms) American cockroach (large, drains and gardens)
Eggs per case 30 to 48 14 to 16
What the female does with it Carries it on her body until about a day before it hatches Drops it, often near a food source
Where you find it Rarely on its own; you see females carrying it In hidden corners, cracks and near food
Time to hatch About 20–30 days Varies with temperature

The numbers come from the Illinois Department of Public Health and NC State University Extension. The German cockroach case is about 8 mm long, 3 mm high and 2 mm wide, according to a Cornell University fact sheet.

Why German cockroaches multiply so fast

  • One female produces five to eight egg cases in her life, about 200 to 250 eggs.
  • A nymph takes roughly 40 to 60 days to become an adult, and the whole cycle from egg to adult takes 70 to 100 days.
  • Because the female keeps the case on her body until it is almost ready, very few eggs are lost.

So a few cockroaches in a kitchen in summer can become hundreds within a couple of months. Read more about German cockroaches in UAE apartments.

Where to look

  • Kitchen: cabinet hinges and corners, under the sink around the pipes, behind and under the fridge, cooker and dishwasher.
  • Bathroom: around the floor drain, behind the toilet, inside the vanity cabinet.
  • Cardboard and clutter: boxes, paper bags and stored packaging are favourite hiding places.
  • Other signs: droppings like black pepper, small dark smears, and shed skins. The Illinois guidance lists egg cases and shed skins as signs of an active infestation.

How to deal with the eggs

1. Remove the cases you find

A vacuum cleaner is the simplest way: vacuum the egg case and any cockroaches you see, then seal the bag or empty the container into a sealed bag outside. Steam cleaning hiding places also helps in heavy infestations.

2. Kill the females before they drop the case

NC State notes that German cockroach females eat much more in the days before they start producing eggs, which makes them easier to reach with bait. Small spots of gel in the cracks where they hide put the bait where they feed.

3. Keep the gel there when the nymphs hatch

Nymphs that hatch after the treatment have to eat the gel too. So:

  • check the spots after about two weeks and add gel where it has been eaten
  • apply again in the same places around two weeks after the first treatment
  • keep a few spots near drains, pipes and the fridge for at least a month

The label rate is small spots of about 0.5 g: 1–3 spots per 3 metres for a light problem, 3–5 for a heavy one. The full method is in how to apply Advion like a professional.

4. Take away what they need

Seal gaps around pipes under the sink, get rid of cardboard, keep food sealed and the sink dry at night. Fewer hiding places and less food mean the gel is found and eaten faster. See how to keep cockroaches out of the kitchen.

Quick answers

Does cockroach gel kill eggs?

No. Gel works when it is eaten, and the case protects the eggs inside. It kills the adults that carry the cases and the nymphs that hatch and feed on it.

Can I crush an egg case?

You can, but vacuuming is cleaner and picks up the cockroaches around it as well. Do it away from food and seal the bag.

How long until no new cockroaches appear?

Because eggs take about 20–30 days to hatch, expect small nymphs for up to a month after the first treatment. If they keep appearing after that, the gel is probably not where they hide or is not being eaten.

Do sprays kill cockroach eggs?

Sprays are not a reliable way to deal with eggs either, and they make cockroaches avoid any gel nearby. See gel bait or spray.
