Advion Cockroach Gel in Dubai: Getting the Original, and Using It Right in a Dubai Apartment

Why cockroaches are so persistent in Dubai apartments
The cockroach behind most Dubai apartment complaints is the German cockroach: small (around 1.5 cm), light brown, with two dark stripes just behind the head. It lives indoors, close to warmth, water and food — which means kitchens and bathrooms.
Dubai's buildings suit it well:
- Shared services. Drain stacks, garbage chutes and service risers connect every apartment on the same vertical line. Cockroaches move along them between units.
- Warmth all year. Air-conditioned homes stay in a comfortable range for cockroaches twelve months a year, so they breed continuously and peak in summer (why summer makes it worse).
- Frequent moves. Furniture, cardboard boxes and second-hand appliances moved between apartments carry egg cases with them.
- Building sprays. When corridors and shafts are sprayed with a repellent insecticide, cockroaches are pushed deeper into walls and into neighbouring units rather than being eliminated.
The practical consequence: in an apartment you are rarely dealing with a sealed, isolated infestation. That changes how you should treat it.
Why gel bait works where sprays fail in a building
Advion Cockroach Gel is a bait, not a contact spray. Cockroaches eat it and go back to where they hide. Its active ingredient, indoxacarb 0.6%, is converted into its active form by the cockroach's own enzymes — Syngenta calls this the MetaActive™ effect — and the short delay means the cockroach gets back to its hiding place before it dies.
Other cockroaches are then exposed through contact with it. Research at Purdue University recorded a chain reaction controlling up to 54 cockroaches from a single exposed insect.

Where to apply it in a typical Dubai apartment
The label rate is small spots of about 0.5 g each (roughly 6 mm across): 1–3 spots per 3 metres for a light problem, 3–5 spots per 3 metres for a heavy one. A 30 g tube gives around 60 spots.

Five mistakes we see again and again in Dubai
- Spraying at the same time. The Advion label is explicit: do not apply bait to surfaces recently treated with residual sprays, and do not spray over the bait. If your building's pest control sprays your apartment, ask them to leave the gel areas alone — or apply fresh gel in new spots afterwards.
- Cleaning the gel away. Cleaners often wipe cabinet corners with strong products. Show them where the dots are and ask them to leave those spots.
- Treating once and stopping. Bait does not affect egg cases. Check the spots after about two weeks and re-apply wherever the gel has been eaten.
- Leaving food and water out. Pet food overnight, dishes in the sink and dripping AC condensate all compete with the bait.
