Why Do Cockroaches Get Worse in the UAE Summer? The Biology Behind It

If it feels like the cockroaches multiply every summer, you're not imagining it. In the UAE the problem genuinely intensifies between May and September — and the reason is biological, not a failure of cleanliness.
Understanding why changes how you treat them.
Heat is a multiplier, not just a discomfort
Cockroaches are cold-blooded, so their entire metabolism runs on ambient temperature. As it rises, everything accelerates: they feed more, move more, and reproduce far faster.
A German cockroach egg case that might take weeks to hatch in cooler conditions hatches noticeably faster in a warm kitchen. Compress each generation and the colony curve steepens sharply. That's why an infestation that looked minor in March feels overwhelming by August.
And here's the part most people miss: air conditioning doesn't fix this. Your rooms are cool, but the places roaches actually live are not — fridge and freezer motor compartments, the voids behind ovens, wall cavities near hot water pipes. These stay warm year-round, which is exactly why they're the highest-value spots to treat.
Humidity is the real driver
A cockroach can survive a long time without food. Without water, it cannot.
Coastal UAE humidity, combined with condensation on cold AC pipes and constantly damp sinks, creates ideal conditions. In summer, roaches migrate toward moisture — which is why you suddenly find them in bathrooms and under kitchen sinks even though the kitchen is where the food is.
Practical consequence: in summer, treat moisture points as seriously as food points.
Summer migration: they come from outside too
Extreme outdoor heat pushes American cockroaches (the large, flying ones) indoors from drains, sewers and garden areas hunting for cooler, damper shelter.
This matters because it's a different problem with a different solution. If you're seeing large roaches appear suddenly at night, you likely have an entry problem rather than an internal colony — and sealing floor drains at night does more than any amount of spraying.
Why your treatment underperforms in summer specifically
1. Gel dries faster. Heat and airflow dry the bait surface, making it less palatable. In summer, inspect your dots every 10–14 days rather than monthly and refresh any that look crusted.
2. Never place gel on hot surfaces. Beside the oven, against hot water pipes, or on any surface above roughly 50°C, the gel liquefies and loses effectiveness. Place it near the warm appliance — in the surrounding cracks — not on the hot metal itself.
3. Storage ruins product before you even use it. A tube left in a car through a UAE summer afternoon can be effectively dead on arrival. Store gel in a cool, dry cupboard indoors — never in a garage, car or unairconditioned storeroom.
4. Competing food is everywhere. Summer means more drinks, more ice, more spills. The gel competes with whatever else is available, so a quick wipe-down of surfaces at night measurably improves results.
Your summer protocol
- Treat the warm zones first — fridge and freezer motor compartments, behind the oven, behind the washing machine. This is where breeding concentrates.
- Treat moisture points second — under sinks around plumbing, behind the toilet base, near AC drain lines.
- Seal floor drains at night and pour water weekly into rarely-used drains. A dry drain trap is an open door.
- Inspect every 10–14 days instead of monthly, and replace consumed or dried dots.
- Dry the sink before bed. It's the single easiest habit with the biggest summer impact.
One more summer-specific point
Because roach exposure to bait is higher in summer, bait aversion can appear faster. If you've used the same gel through an entire hot season and notice the dots sitting untouched while roaches are still active, that's your signal to rotate to a different active ingredient rather than reapply the same one.
The honest summary
Summer doesn't create cockroaches — it accelerates them. The colony was already there; heat simply compressed its timeline.
Which is genuinely good news: the same treatment works, it just needs tighter timing and smarter placement during these months.
