Advion vs Maxforce vs Combat: Which Cockroach Gel Actually Works Best in the UAE?

Watch the video guide
Search for cockroach gel in the UAE and the same names come up again and again: Advion, Maxforce, Combat, Alpine. Each one has fans who swear it is the best. So which one actually works?
The short answer: all of them are real cockroach baits that work when cockroaches eat them. The difference that decides your result is not the brand — it is the active ingredient and its mode of action, and whether the cockroaches in your home are still willing to eat it. Pick by those two things and you will choose better than most professionals.
A note on fairness: we sell Advion, Advion Evolution and Alpine, not Maxforce or Combat. So everything below about the other brands comes from their published product labels, not from opinion.
The six gels side by side
| Gel | Maker | Active ingredient | Mode of action (IRAC group) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Advion Cockroach Gel | Syngenta | Indoxacarb 0.6% | 22A |
| Advion Evolution | Syngenta | Indoxacarb 0.6%, different bait formula | 22A |
| Alpine Cockroach Gel | BASF | Dinotefuran 0.5% | 4A |
| Maxforce FC Magnum | Envu (formerly Bayer) | Fipronil 0.05% | 2B |
| Maxforce Impact | Envu | Clothianidin 1% | 4A |
| Combat Max Roach Gel | Henkel | Fipronil 0.01% | 2B |
Look at the last column. Six brands, but only three modes of action. That single column explains most "this gel stopped working" stories.
What the mode of action group means
The Insecticide Resistance Action Committee (IRAC) groups insecticides by how they kill — which target in the insect's nervous system they hit. Products in the same group hit the same target, even when the brand, the colour and the price are completely different.
- Group 22A — indoxacarb (Advion, Advion Evolution). Blocks sodium channels in the nerves. It is taken in as a less active form and converted into its active form inside the insect. The kill is gradual, which gives cockroaches time to return to their hiding places — and other cockroaches then feed on their droppings and remains.
- Group 4A — neonicotinoids (Alpine's dinotefuran, Maxforce Impact's clothianidin). Act on a different nerve receptor and tend to work faster. Dinotefuran has Reduced-Risk status from the US EPA, which is why Alpine is popular in kitchens and food premises.
- Group 2B — fipronil (Maxforce FC Magnum, Combat Max). Blocks a third target. Also a delayed kill that spreads through the colony.
Why this matters: when cockroaches survive repeated exposure to one group, resistance to that group builds up — and it usually carries over to every brand in that group. Switching from Maxforce FC Magnum to Combat Max is not a rotation; both are fipronil. Switching from Alpine to Maxforce Impact is not one either; both are group 4A.
No gel is immune — including Advion
It would be easy for us to say Advion always wins. It doesn't. Research at Purdue University on field-collected German cockroaches found populations with reduced susceptibility to fipronil and, in one strain, very high resistance to indoxacarb, while other strains were still fully susceptible. Resistance is local: it depends on what has been used on that building's cockroaches before.
The practical lesson is the same one professionals follow: if a gel was eaten and worked for months and then stopped, change the group — not just the brand. We explain the full approach in our 3-month rotation programme.
Concentration is not strength
Combat Max has 0.01% fipronil and Maxforce FC Magnum has 0.05%. That does not make one five times "stronger" in your kitchen. Each formula is built so that a cockroach eating a normal amount gets a lethal dose. What decides the result is whether they eat it: a gel they won't eat does nothing, whatever the percentage.
That is why the bait formula matters as much as the chemical. Cockroaches that have learned to avoid one bait base (often the sugar in it) can still accept a different one. Advion and Advion Evolution share an active ingredient but use different bait formulas for exactly this reason.
So which one should you choose in the UAE?
- Small brown cockroaches in an apartment kitchen, first treatment: Advion is the standard professional choice and is labelled for German, American and several other species.
- You used a fipronil gel (Maxforce FC Magnum or Combat) and it stopped working: move to a different group — Advion (22A) or Alpine (4A).
- You used Advion for months and they stopped eating it: switch to Alpine, or try Advion Evolution if they are rejecting the bait formula rather than the active ingredient.
- Restaurants, cafés and food premises: Alpine, thanks to its EPA Reduced-Risk active ingredient — always within the label's crack-and-crevice directions.
- Heavy or long-running infestation: place two or three different gels side by side so the colony always finds one it accepts. Our Triple Gel Kit puts Advion, Alpine and Advion Evolution in one box for this.
Whatever brand you pick: genuine and fresh
The comparison above only holds for genuine, well-stored product. A counterfeit or heat-damaged tube will lose to any of the others. Before you trust a tube:
- Check that the active ingredient on the label matches the table above.
- Read the batch code — our free batch code checker decodes Advion and Alpine codes into a production date.
- Be wary of prices far below the market; see 7 signs of genuine Advion.
- Make sure the product you buy is registered for sale in the UAE.
Quick answers
Is Advion better than Maxforce?
Neither is better in every home. They use different modes of action — indoxacarb (22A) versus fipronil (2B) for Maxforce FC Magnum, or clothianidin (4A) for Maxforce Impact. The better one is the one your cockroaches eat and are not resistant to.
Are Combat and Maxforce FC Magnum the same thing?
Different makers and formulas, but the same active ingredient — fipronil — so they count as the same group for rotation.
Can I use two different gels at the same time?
Yes, and in heavy infestations it often helps: place them as separate spots so the cockroaches can choose. Do not mix them in one spot, and never spray insecticide near any gel.
Which gel is best for large American cockroaches?
Advion's label names American cockroaches specifically, and Alpine's covers cockroaches in general. With the large ones, closing their entry points matters as much as the bait — see cockroaches coming up the bathroom drain.
What is the strongest cockroach killer overall?
We compared gels with sprays, powders and professional treatment in the strongest cockroach killer in the UAE.
