How Long Does Advion Cockroach Gel Take to Work? A Realistic Day-by-Day Timeline

Watch the video guide

The short answer

  • Advion starts working within 24 hours of a cockroach eating it.
  • Light to moderate infestations usually show a clear drop within 1–2 weeks.
  • Heavy infestations take 3–6 weeks and need a follow-up application, because the bait cannot reach eggs that have not hatched yet.

Why it is not instant — on purpose

A spray kills the cockroach it touches. Advion is designed to do something more useful: let the cockroach that eats it get back to its hiding place first.

Its active ingredient, indoxacarb, is converted into its active form by the cockroach's own enzymes. That short delay means the cockroach returns to the colony, where others are exposed through contact with it. Research at Purdue University recorded a chain reaction controlling up to 54 cockroaches from a single exposed insect.

If Advion killed on the spot, you would lose that chain reaction — and the colony hiding inside your walls would carry on breeding.

The timeline: what you will see, and what to do

When What you will probably see What to do
Day 1 Sometimes more cockroaches than usual, even in daytime. Affected cockroaches behave abnormally and wander into the open. Nothing. Do not spray — it contaminates the bait and scatters the colony.
Days 2–4 Dead or dying cockroaches, often on their backs, near the bait spots. Some spots partly eaten. Sweep up dead cockroaches. Top up any spot that has been eaten completely.
Week 1–2 A large drop in adults. Light infestations often look clear by now. Keep food and water away from the bait areas. Leave the spots alone when cleaning.
Week 2–3 Small, young cockroaches (nymphs) appear. This is the new generation hatching from egg cases the bait could not reach. This is the key follow-up. Inspect every spot and re-apply wherever the gel is gone, dried or dirty.
Week 4–6 Heavy infestations are usually under control. Occasional single sightings. Keep a few maintenance spots near entry points — drains and pipe entries — and check them monthly.
Month 3 If cockroaches return and ignore the gel, they may have developed an aversion to it. Switch to a bait with a different formulation — see the 3-month rotation program.

Why the young ones appear in week 2–3

The cockroach behind most UAE home infestations, the German cockroach, does not leave its eggs lying around. The female carries a small egg case — commonly around 30 to 40 eggs — attached to her body until shortly before it hatches. The eggs inside are protected; the bait does not reach them.

So even after the adults die, a new generation can still emerge over the following weeks. This is not the gel failing. It is exactly why the second application around week two matters more than the first.

What slows Advion down

  • Competing food. Crumbs, pet food left out overnight, greasy cooker surfaces and open bins give cockroaches an alternative to the bait.
  • Sprays and cleaning products. The label says not to apply bait to surfaces recently treated with residual sprays, and not to spray over bait. Strong cleaners on the spots have a similar effect.
  • Placement too far from where they hide. A spot in the middle of a cabinet floor is less effective than one in the hinge or the corner crack where cockroaches actually rest.
  • Too few spots. For a heavy infestation the label rate is 3–5 spots per 3 metres. Several small spots beat one large blob.
  • Old or heat-damaged gel. A tube that has dried out in storage is far less attractive (storage mistakes).
  • Reinvasion. In apartment buildings, cockroaches from neighbouring units keep arriving through shared drains and shafts — which is why maintenance spots matter.

How to tell it is working

  1. The gel is disappearing. Eaten spots are the clearest sign the bait is being taken.
  2. You find dead cockroaches, especially in the first week.
  3. The night check gets quieter. Turn the kitchen light off for 10 minutes, then switch it on or use a torch. Count what you see. Repeat weekly — the number should fall steadily.

If nothing has changed after two weeks

Go through this in order: Was anything sprayed or cleaned near the spots? Are the spots in cracks close to where cockroaches hide? Is the gel being eaten at all? Is there food left out at night? Most cases we see come down to one of these, and they are simple to fix. Our page on why gel bait sometimes fails goes through each one — or message us on WhatsApp with a photo of where you applied it, and we will tell you what we would change, free.

Quick answers

Why am I seeing more cockroaches right after applying Advion?

Affected cockroaches come out of hiding and behave abnormally before they die. It is common in the first day or two and usually a sign the bait is being eaten.

Should I remove the dead cockroaches?

Yes — sweep them up as normal. Just do not wipe away the gel spots while you clean.

How often should I re-apply?

Check the spots after about two weeks and re-apply wherever the gel has gone. After that, check monthly. The label instructs to inspect bait placements and reapply as needed.

How long does one application keep working?

As long as the spot stays clean, soft and uneaten. Replace any spot that has been eaten, has dried out or has got dirty — in practice that means checking every two to four weeks.

How much do I need for my home?

A 30 g tube gives around 60 spots, enough for one treatment of a typical apartment kitchen and bathrooms. Larger homes or heavy infestations need two tubes or a box of four. Full application details are in our Advion application guide.
