Why Your Cockroach Gel Failed — 7 Real Reasons

You bought the gel. You applied it. Nothing happened. Before you blame the product — in 9 years of handling UAE cases, we've found that over 90% of "gel failures" are application mistakes, not product defects. Here are the seven real reasons, in order of how often we see them.

1. You sprayed insecticide near the gel

This is the number one killer. Repellent sprays (pyrethroids) leave a residue cockroaches actively avoid. If you spray around, above, or before applying the gel, roaches will not approach the bait at all. The fix: stop all spraying. If you already sprayed, wipe the surfaces with soapy water, dry them, and place fresh gel dots.

2. You cleaned the surface with strong chemicals

Bleach, ammonia, and scented cleaners contaminate the bait the same way sprays do. Gel placed on a freshly bleached surface loses much of its attractiveness. The fix: apply gel on clean, dry, chemical-free surfaces — or on a small piece of cardboard placed in the spot.

3. You placed it in the wrong spots

Cockroaches feed within a few meters of their harborage. Gel on an open countertop or the middle of a wall is wasted. The fix: place dots inside cracks and tight corners: cabinet hinges and joints, behind and under the fridge, beside the stove, under the sink, around plumbing entries, and inside the motor compartment area of appliances.

4. You used too much gel in one place

A common instinct — and it backfires. A large blob dries and crusts on the outside, and roaches take one taste and leave. The fix: many small lentil-sized dots spread widely beat one big blob every time. 3–5 dots per 3 meters for heavy infestations, 1–3 for light ones.

5. There was better food available

Gel competes with whatever else is on offer. Crumbs, grease film on the stove, an open bin, wet dishes in the sink, and pet food left out overnight all outrank the bait. The fix: for the first two weeks, run a tight kitchen — wipe grease, seal the bin, dry the sink at night, lift pet bowls.

6. Bait aversion — you used the same gel for too long

This is the one most people never hear about. German cockroach populations can develop a genetic aversion to the specific sugars used in a bait matrix. Whole populations learn to reject it. The fix: this is exactly why we push the rotation protocol — switch to a different active ingredient and a different food matrix every 3 months (Advion → Alpine → Advion Evolution).

7. You stopped too early

Gel is not a spray; it is not designed to kill on contact. The roach feeds, returns to the nest, and dies there — then others feed on it, and the effect cascades. Peak die-off is usually days 3–10, and hidden nymphs keep emerging for two weeks. The fix: re-dose after 10–14 days and judge results at the two-week mark, not day two.

The product genuinely could be at fault in two cases

It's counterfeit. The UAE market has a real counterfeit problem with Advion in particular. Genuine product comes in sealed official Syngenta or BASF packaging with a legible batch number and production date. Suspiciously cheap gel with no markings is usually near-useless.

It's old or heat-damaged. Gel stored in a hot car or warehouse for months dries out and loses palatability. Genuine gel keeps up to 5 years — but only when stored cool and dry.
